Prof. Giannakopoulos received his medical degree from the Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki, Greece in 1991. He completed his residency in Urology at the Second Department of Urology of the University of Athens Medical School in 1999 and the same year he became Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU).
In 2001 he received scholarship from the National Scholarship Foundation for training in Endourology. He was trained in Endourology-Urinary Stone Disease in the Glickman Urological Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, USA. He was elected Lecturer in Urology of the Democritus University of Thrace Medical School in 2004 and subsequently Assistant Professor in 2009, Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor of Urology in 2019. He has published more than 70 papers in international peer-review medical journals (PubMed) and more than 100 papers in Greek medical journals. He is also the author of 7 book chapters. He serves as reviewer for 19 international medical journals and he is member of the editorial board in one medical journal. He is member of the board of examiners of the European Board of Urology (EBU) and board member of SEGUR (Southeastern Group for Urolithiasis Research). His specialty interests include urinary stone disease, endourology and urological laparoscopy.
